Wirra Wirra

Wirra Wirra, which mean ‘under the gum trees’ in Aborigine, was originally founded in 1894 by Australian cricketer Robert Wigley. After his death in 1925 it fell into disrepair before being rescued and restored to glory in 1969 by Greg and Roger Trott. Sam Connew, the head winemaker was recognised at the IWC in 2007, when she was named as red winemaker of the year. The vineyards are now being farmed bio-dynamically, whilst the winemaking is a judicious blend of old and new. The Scrubby Rise red (named after a vineyard opposite the winery) is a classic cabernet shiraz blend, with a twist of Petit Verdot, aged for 12 months in oak. A delicious, juicy, brambly wine.
