Gotland

Plans for a Gotland Whisky Distillery began in 2004 with the intention to build it on the west coast of Gotland Island in Sweden. However, the original founders sold the company, and the new owner built the distillery within his closed sugar refinery located in the middle of the island. Stills were delivered on July 28, 2010, the first single malt whisky, named Isle of Lime, is expected in 2014. The name Isle of Lime is a reference of the limestone bedrock that makes up the island. The company grows its own Polar barley and the malt is smoked with domestic peat.
