}Thomas MacKenzie of Ord, who inherited the family estate, leased land for the Glen Ord distillery to be built in 1838 but there are records of an ale house and meal mill on the Glen Ord site since 1549. The meal mill closed as recently as 1958. The distillery was originally water-powered by two large water wheels driven by water from Loch nam Bonnach and Loch nan Eun.
