Chateau Mouton Rothschild - Jeroboams

Chateau Mouton Rothschild

Mouton was a victim of bad timing, as it went through a brief period in the doldrums that coincided with the 1855 classification, meaning it was ‘only’ ranked as a second growth. Purchased by the English branch of the Rothschild banking dynasty in 1853, it rapidly reclaimed its place as one of the most expensive and sought after wines, but it was not until 1973, after a tireless campaign, that it was promoted to First growth (the only change to the classification to date). There are 77 hectares of red grapes and 5 of white. Generally the most opulent and fleshy of the firsts and with a power that nearly matches Latour, the last 20 years have seen Mouton’s star rise even further.
