Chateau Lafaurie Maison Neuve - Jeroboams

Chateau Lafaurie Maison Neuve

Situated to the West of Pomerol, this relatively small property is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. There are just over 7 hectares of vineyard on gravel and clay soils. The wine undergoes quite a long vatting of 1 month allowing for good extraction, whilst the gentle handling and nature of the terroir means there are no hard tannins. The wine then spends a year in oak barrels, a third new with each vintage. The 2004 shows the typical character of the property, with warm plum and damson fruits, a spicy vanilla edge and aromas reminiscent of smoked game. Although from the ‘lesser’ Lalande de Pomerol appellation, this wine gives many far grander Pomerols a real run for their money. Peyreau was built by the Beylot family in 1860 and was purchased by the von Neipperg family in 1971. The property consists of just under 13 hectares planted to 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and borders the world renowned Clos de l’Oratoire. Count Stephan von Neipperg overseas the winemaking, which produces a very round feminine wine, full of charm and grace.
