Chateau Angelus - Jeroboams

Chateau Angelus

In the same family since 1921 and currently owned by cousins Hubert de Boüard and Jean-Bernard Grenié. Hubert has been in charge since 1985 and under his stewardship this 23 hectare property has enjoyed a meteoric rise to Grand Cru Classé (B) in 1986 and then to Grand Cru Classé (A) in 2012, placing it alongside Cheval-Blanc, Ausone and Pavie at the top of the St.-Émilion tree. Roughly equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the wine is aged in 100% new oak and is very powerful, concentrated and extracted, all traits that have helped secure some remarkable scores, but underneath the power there is also elegance, it just takes 10 years for it to come forth. Angelus is never less than impressive to taste, but, like Pavie, in ripe vintages it can lack the sheer drinkability of the likes of Cheval Blanc or Belair-Monange.
