2017 Burgundy En Primeur
· Ben Pearson Ben Pearson onFounded in 1891, The Caledonian Club is known as a little bit of Scotland in the heart of London. It’s also a stone’s throw away from our shops in Belgravia and Knightsbridge, making it an excellent location for our annual Burgundy En Primeur tasting. Whilst the Scots were busy setting up their 19th Century enclave, the Burgundians were rather busy too. The early 1890s saw the largest replanting of vineyards in history to counter the devastation caused by phylloxera.
Fast forward to the 21st Century, and both The Caledonian Club and the vineyards of Burgundy remain in rude health. Our customers packed out the club on Wednesday evening to taste the nascent 2017s and meet a selection of our growers. Despite (because of?) the doom and gloom surrounding the global economy, demand for Burgundy remains as strong as ever, and it was heartening to see so many people turn out in force to taste.
Spirits were high on the evening, and 2017 is a vintage to put a smile on people’s faces. Many of the wines won’t need an age in the cellar to mature prior to drinking, but the best wines will comfortably see in the 250th anniversary of The Caledonian Club.
