Villany

Villany is located in the southwest of Hungary, very close to the border with Croatia. Red wine is the foray of choice, with the classic Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot allowing for a Hungarian twist on a timeless blend. Syrah, Pinot Noir and the Austro-Hungarian varieties Kadarka and Kekfrankos also grow well in Villany, often blended together with the aforementioned Bordeaux varieties. Although it does share its latitude with Bordeaux, the Villany climate is distinctly sub-Meditterean, with a markedly cool mesoclimate due to the Villányi-Hegység. This 18 kilometer long limestone ridge provides altitude, rising 300 meters above sea level, and a southern bank of slopes on which the majority of vineyards are planted. There is a noticable weight to the red wines produced here when compared to the wines of the cooler Sopron region.
