Montsant

Located within Catalonia in northern Spain, Montsant is a relatively recent addition to the Spanish DO landscape, having been formed in 2001 out of the Tarragona sub-zone. The topographical variety, combined with the high altitude of the vineyards (averaging 360 meters above sea level), gives wines of great interest, intensity and quality. Lots of Mediterranean sunshine during the day, with cool nights, means the old vine Garnacha, for which the region is famed, doesn’t sacrifice freshness in the pursuit of even ripeness. Carinena (Carignan) and Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) are also capable of producing high quality wines, as are international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Red wines are the most common, although white wines made from Chardonnay, Macabeo and Garnacha Blanca are produced in small quantities.
