Montevideo

Montevideo is the both the capital city and established heartland of quality wine production in Uruguay. It is one of the few quality wine growing regions in the world that is in such close proximity to a city, covering the 30km between Montevideo’s northern suburbs and Canelones. Although, as Château Haut-Brion demonstrate, this doesn’t have to be a problem. The climate itself is comparable to Bordeaux, albeit slightly warmer, as too is the topography of the vineyards. It is no surprise then that the grape varieties that perform best are Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, along with Syrah, Chardonnay and Tannat. Given the proximity to Montevideo city, this region is a popular destination for day-trippers visiting the vineyards and producers.
