Margaret River

Margaret River is one of Australia’s world-class wine producing regions. It lies around three hours south of Perth, running 100 kilometers along the Western Australia coast, from Cape Naturaliste in the north, to Cape Leeuwin in the south. The most important effect on Margaret River is the Indian Ocean, which exerts a strong maritime influence over the region, mitigating the most severe heat. Without this, the wines produced here would without doubt lack the elegance and finesse that marks them out as exceptional. Bordeaux varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in particular, but also Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay, do particularly well on the laterite soils, rich in iron. Vineyards were first planted in 1967 by Vasse Felix, swiftly followed by Moss Wood, Cullen and Peter Leeuwin.
