}This extremely hot and arid region in South Eastern Spain is renowned for producing strong red wines, mostly made from Monastrell. Historically the wines were made at the cooperative, were coarse and mainly used for blending with lighter wines from the North, but the last 20 years has seen some ambitious private estates tame the sometimes savage Monastrell, producing rich and full, but suprisingly refined wines.
