Beira

Located in northern Portugal, Beira stretches from Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo in the north to Castelo Branco in the south, abutted Spain along its eastern border. It is a topographically diverse part of Portugal, comprising moorland and forests, along with rocky peaks and sweeping valleys. The Serra da Esterla, the country’s highest mountain range, gives Beira a more continental climate than other regions, especially compared to Alentejo in the south.

Wine production in Beira is varied, primarily depending on the inclination of the producer. When in the right hands, wines made from the local white grape, Fonte Cal, or Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, along with other international varieties, can be character and delicious. Indeed, with quality generally on the rise, Beira is a region to keep an eye on.
