Clos de Luz
Clos de Luz is a family winery located in Almahue Valley, known as the birthplace of Carmenere in Chile, located 70 miles South East of Santiago. It enjoys a wide temperature fluctuation between day and night, helping obtain high concentration in the wines, whilst retaining freshness. Gabriel Edwards currently runs his family domaine, which was bought by his great grandfather in 1892, and which covers 33 hectares of vineyards, planted in 1945 by Gabriel’s grandmother, Luz. They are some of the oldest Carmenere vineyards in Chile and, until Gabriel decided to return to Chile and make his own wine, the grapes were sold to Casa Lapostolle. The domaine’s vineyards are 100% ungrafted Massal selection from old vineyards, as opposed to a large majority of vineyards locally planted using clonal selection. The vineyards are certified organic and are ploughed by horses, as the twisted trunks of the old vines make it impossible to use a tractor. Harvest is earlier here than in many estates, as Gabriel wants to produce wines of natural freshness, rather than brute power.
